Australasian Real Estate Institutes’ Auctioneering Championship
The Australasian Real Estate Institutes’ Auctioneering Championships is an annual event conducted jointly by the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) and the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) representing the most skilled auctioneers that Australia and New Zealand have to offer.
The inaugural Auctioneering Championships were first held in 1991 between the Real Estate Institutes of Tasmania and Victoria to provide an opportunity to showcase their best auctioneers. In 1993, the concept was then adopted by the Real Estate Institute of South Australia (REISA) and held every two years. As time went on all other states and territories also adopted the concept whereby subsequently in 2005 all the state/territory Real Estate Institutes (REIs) and REINZ adopted the concept and the Championships become an annual event becoming the most prestigious event on the Australasian auctioneering calendar.
Each state and territory Real Estate Institute and the REINZ arrange and hold their individual competitions to determine their best two auctioneers who then go on to compete in the Australasian Real Estate Institutes’ Auctioneering Championships.
The annual event is rotated around the different states and territories of Australia with New Zealand hosting the event every four years.
This year the Australasian Auctioneering Championships was hosted by REISA. The Championships tests an auctioneer’s skill and ability to command a crowd, manage any issues at the auction and call complex bidding offers.
The five finalists were selected after the first round of 18 auctions completed. Judges decided on a winner after the five finalists were briefed and auctioned a prestigious historic Adelaide home to mock-sell under the hammer. The bidding was fast and furious and the competition was exciting and highly entertaining. The contest between the five outstanding auctioneers was close.
Queenslander Justin Nickerson took out the title of 2017 Australasian Real Estate Institutes’ Auctioneering Champion, winning the contest for the second year in a row. This is the first time an Australian has won two titles and the third time in the history of the event an auctioneer has gone back to back. Justin was announced as the title holder at a gala dinner at the Museum of South Australia. The other finalists were Mark McGoldrick, NZ, Ned Allison, NZ, Bronte Manuel, SA and Clarence White, NSW, who came runner up.
